Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about our products.
Question: Do HEPA Air Purifiers Make You Sick?
Question: Do HEPA Air Purifiers Make You Sick?
Answer: No, HEPA air purifiers do not make you sick. They are designed to improve your health by removing harmful particles like allergens, dust, tree and flower pollen. Some may experience mild, temporary discomfort as their bodies adjust to cleaner air, but this is normal and should subside quickly.
Choose HEPA air purifiers from reputable brands like Coway for safe and effective air purification.
Question: What is a HEPA air purifier filter?
Question: What is a HEPA air purifier filter?
Answer: A HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is a type of air filter that meets specific standards for removing tiny particles from the air. HEPA filters are designed to capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns, including dust, tree and flower pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and even some bacteria and viruses.
HEPA filters work by forcing air through a dense network of fibers that trap particles as they pass through. This makes them highly effective at improving indoor air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory problems and allergies.

Question: Do air purifiers remove smells?
Question: Do air purifiers remove smells?
Answer: Yes, air purifiers can help remove certain smells from the air, but their effectiveness depends on the type of odor and the air purifier's features.
HEPA Filters: While primarily designed to trap particles, HEPA filters can also capture some odor-causing particles like dust and pet dander.
Activated Carbon Filters: Air purifiers with activated carbon filters are specifically designed to absorb and neutralize odors caused by gases and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
If you're looking for an air purifier to specifically target odors, choose one with a high-quality activated carbon filter like the Airmega 250. For more information on how air purifiers work with odors, check out our blog post here.
Question: How often should I change my air purifier filters?
Question: How often should I change my air purifier filters?
Answer: Filter replacement frequency depends on the filter type, usage, and your home's air quality.
- HEPA filters: Replace HEPA filters Every 6-12 months
- Activated carbon filters: Replace Activated carbon filters Every 3-6 months
- Washable pre-filters: Clean washable pre-filters every few weeks
- Usage: If you use your air purifier continuously or in a particularly dusty or polluted environment, you may need to change filters more frequently.
- Air Quality: Poor air quality, like during wildfire season, can clog filters faster, requiring more frequent replacements.
Many Coway Airmega air purifiers have a filter replacement indicator that alerts you when it's time for a change.
For optimal air purification and to ensure your air purifier functions effectively, it's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for filter replacement and maintenance.
By replacing filters regularly, you'll maintain clean air and get the most out of your air purifier.
Question: Where should you place your Cowaymega air purifier?
Question: Where should you place your Cowaymega air purifier?
Answer: For optimal performance, place your Coway Airmega air purifier in a location that allows for unobstructed airflow.
Here are some general guidelines:
Open Space: Place the air purifier in an open area of the room, away from walls, furniture, or other obstacles that could block the intake and outlet vents.
Central Location: Ideally, position it in a central location to maximize air circulation and reach all corners of the room.
Elevated Surface (Optional): If possible, placing it on a slightly elevated surface, like a table or stand, can help improve airflow and distribution.
Avoid placing the air purifier:
- In corners or tight spaces.
- Directly behind furniture or curtains.
- In areas with high humidity or excessive moisture (e.g., bathrooms).
- In areas exposed to direct sunlight, as this can affect the sensor's accuracy.
By following these guidelines, you'll ensure your Coway Airmega air purifier can effectively clean the air in your room and provide the maximum benefit.

3Aerosol test conducted in a Biosafety level 3 laboratory with two Coway air purifier models, Coway Airmega 250 and 400 for removal of SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol by US based MRI Global, a not-for-profit laboratory and partner of US Department of Defense. The test was conducted in a 13.1ft3 chamber. Virus was aerosolized for 15 minutes and the product was turned on high for 2 minutes. Result showed each product effectively removed over 99.98% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 2 minutes. This is a result from a laboratory experiment condition and result may vary in different conditions. This result does not imply it kills SARS-CoV-2 or prevents the transmission of Covid-19. Coway Airmega 250S and 400S are identical to the tested models and has equal performance with an additional mobile connectivity function.

5The coverage area of the air purifier is based on an area where the air cleaner can make two air changes per hour (ACPH). An air change per hour translates to how many times an air purifier can clean an area, assuming the height of a ceiling to be 8 ft, in one hour. Therefore ** means two air changes per hour means that the cleaner can clean the area once every 30 minutes and * means air changes per hour means that the air purifier can clean the area once every 60 minutes.
