All About Pollen
Pollen is one of the most ubiquitous and troublesome allergens affecting millions of people worldwide. These tiny, airborne particles released by trees, grasses, and weeds are the bane of allergy sufferers, triggering a cascade of unpleasant symptoms that can significantly impact their quality of life.
As the seasons change and plants bloom, pollen counts soar, leaving many of us sneezing, sniffling, and struggling with itchy, watery eyes. The problem is compounded by the fact that pollen can travel for miles, making it nearly impossible to escape its pervasive presence.
So, how can we protect ourselves from pollen? And where does indoor air quality factor in?
What is a Pollen Allergy?
Pollen allergies are caused by the immune system's overreaction to these seemingly harmless particles.
When pollen enters the body, the immune system mistakenly identifies it as a threat, triggering the release of histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. This immune response leads to the classic allergy symptoms that leave sufferers feeling miserable.
The severity of pollen allergies can vary widely, with some people experiencing mild discomfort, while others face debilitating symptoms that disrupt their daily lives. Factors such as the type of pollen, the concentration in the air, and an individual's sensitivity all contribute to the intensity of the allergic reaction.
Are There Different Types of Pollen?
Pollen can be categorized into several distinct types, each with its own seasonal patterns and potency. Among the most common culprits are:
- Tree Pollen: Released in early spring, tree pollen from sources like oak, birch, and maple can wreak havoc on allergy sufferers.
- Grass Pollen: Grasses, such as timothy, orchard, and Kentucky bluegrass, release their pollen during the late spring and summer months.
- Weed Pollen: Weeds like ragweed, pigweed, and mugwort contribute to the pollen burden, particularly in the late summer and fall.
Understanding the specific pollen types that trigger your allergies is crucial, as it allows you to better prepare and manage your symptoms.
Meet Your Ally in the Fight Against Pollen
While avoiding pollen altogether may be impossible, there are effective solutions to minimize exposure and find relief. Coway’s air purifiers offer a powerful and innovative way to combat pollen allergies by utilizing advanced filtration technology.
The Airmega Advantage
Airmega air purifiers are designed to remove a wide range of airborne pollutants, including pollen, pet dander, and dust, from the indoor environment.
At the heart of their powerful performance is a multi-stage filtration system that includes:
- Pre-Filter: This captures larger particles, such as pollen, pet dander, and dust.
- Activated Carbon Filter: This filter effectively removes 99%4 of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gases, and odors.
- True HEPA Filter: The True HEPA filter is capable of capturing 99.97%2 of airborne particles, including pollen, mold spores, and other allergens.
The strategic placement of these filters within the Airmega system ensures that polluted air is thoroughly cleansed before being circulated back into the room, providing a safe haven for allergy sufferers.

Intelligent Automation for Effortless Pollen Protection
Air purifiers that combat pollen need to go beyond mere filtration and instead offer intelligent automation features that enhance their effectiveness in combating pollen allergies. Features like auto mode, air quality monitoring, and filter replacement indicators take the guesswork out of maintaining a pollen-free home.
Auto mode, for instance, adjusts the fan speed based on real-time air quality, ensuring that the purifier is always operating at optimal efficiency to tackle pollen and other pollutants. The air quality monitoring system provides valuable insights into the air quality in your home, allowing you to monitor pollen levels and take appropriate actions.
Moreover, the filter replacement indicators take the guesswork out of maintenance, ensuring that you replace the filters at the right time to maintain peak performance and maximize the effectiveness of the Airmega system.

3Aerosol test conducted in a Biosafety level 3 laboratory with two Coway air purifier models, Coway Airmega 250 and 400 for removal of SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol by US based MRI Global, a not-for-profit laboratory and partner of US Department of Defense. The test was conducted in a 13.1ft3 chamber. Virus was aerosolized for 15 minutes and the product was turned on high for 2 minutes. Result showed each product effectively removed over 99.98% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 2 minutes. This is a result from a laboratory experiment condition and result may vary in different conditions. This result does not imply it kills SARS-CoV-2 or prevents the transmission of Covid-19. Coway Airmega 250S and 400S are identical to the tested models and has equal performance with an additional mobile connectivity function.

5The coverage area of the air purifier is based on an area where the air cleaner can make two air changes per hour (ACPH). An air change per hour translates to how many times an air purifier can clean an area, assuming the height of a ceiling to be 8 ft, in one hour. Therefore ** means two air changes per hour means that the cleaner can clean the area once every 30 minutes and * means air changes per hour means that the air purifier can clean the area once every 60 minutes.
