How Long Do Air Purifier Filters Last?

One of the key components of your Airmega Air Purifier is the air filter, and you’re in luck. Our Max2 Filter system gives you cleaner air than the competition can typically offer, alongside outstanding efficiency for your home or office unit.

But how long do our purifier filters last?  A lot will depend on how regularly you run your purifier, how much space you’re covering, and what local environmental conditions you’re dealing with. Your starting point, however, is an industry-leading filter that works harder and lasts longer.

The Factors That Impact Filter Longevity

The air filter in a purification unit traps airborne particles and pollutants. Basic filters use a fiberglass or pleated material that really only removes the larger particles from the air flow and will typically become too clogged to remain effective within just a few months. Higher quality filters, such as our Max2 filter, remove particles from the air through multiple layers, including a Pre-Filter, each one targeting different particle sizes. This gives the overall filter a longer lifespan.

Key Factors Affecting Filters

Whatever style of filter you’re using, you’ll see the longevity impacted by:

  • Room size: the demands on an Airmega ProX filter (for Extra Large Spaces) are much greater than those on a small space unit, like the Airmega 150, for example - simply because of the volume of air passing through.
  • Usage intensity: if you’re only using air purification for targeted, time-limited use (eg. at night in the bedroom, or during pollen season only), your filter will accumulate fewer particles (and last longer) than a system that’s running almost uninterrupted (eg. in an office).
  • Airborne pollutant concentration: like us humans, the longevity of an air filter is negatively affected by the presence of airborne particles and contaminants from wildfires, VOCs, traffic and construction dust, to name a few. A filter will last longer in clean mountain air than it would in a built-up area surrounded by cars. Pets and people can also significantly add to the mix. The more dander and dust from living things, the more your air filter is trapping.

How Long Will Your Coway Air Filter Last?

Two Coway customers might have different environmental circumstances and living conditions to address, but nobody has to resort to guesswork when it comes to filter replacement.

Innovative Features

Our air purifiers incorporate a Filter Change Indicator to tell you precisely when it’s time to replace your air filter and Filter Alerts to ensure that you don’t miss a change. Other smart features include the Energy Efficient Eco-Mode so that your fan isn’t running when no air pollution is detected, saving you on energy consumption and prolonging the longevity of your filters.

Depending on the model, our bestselling air purifiers can feature these filtration layers.

Pre-filter

A removable, washable screen to trap large contaminants (eg. pet hair, dust). You don’t need to replace this - simply wash and dry whenever your unit shows an alert, or according to your own personal cleaning schedule.

Deodorization Filter

Coway’s Deodorization filter removes harmful gases like VOCs and unpleasant odors that may cause headaches, nausea, etc., and it provides powerful deodorization.

Activated Carbon Filter

Coway's advanced Activated Carbon filter removes 99%⁴ of harmful gases like VOCs and unpleasant odors that may cause headaches, nausea, etc., and it provides powerful deodorization. We also infused a special treatment on the surface of the active carbon and built it in a unique geometric lattice structure to enhance the deodorization efficiency.

True HEPA filter

The Green True Hepa Filter traps 99.97%2 of ultra-fine particles down to 0.03 ㎛², including mold, bacteria and pollen. As a rule of thumb, you can expect your True HEPA filter to last for 1 year before replacement is necessary.

Remember that guidelines are relative. The longevity of any filter is hugely influenced by the original quality of the air entering the unit. That’s why it’s important to focus on the usage profile of your particular air purifier rather than the running time alone. It’s like gas consumption on a car - a longer journey at a steady, moderate speed will be more efficient than a short, start-stop dash around town.

How to Prolong the Longevity of Your Coway Filter

Our mission is to help remove headaches (and coughing, wheezing or allergies) from your daily life, so we don’t want you to fuss about your filter. That’s why your Coway Air Purifier will tell you when it’s time for an air filter change. Otherwise, you’re free to clean your Pre-filter as often as you like, noting that the cleaner your first line of defense,  the longer you can expect your Max2 system to last.

Understanding the different filter types and their lifespans is crucial for maintaining optimal air quality in your home. Let's break down the three main filter types Airmega offers:

  1. The All-in-One Wonder: Max2 Filter

Lifespan: 12+ months

The Max2 filter is Airmega's powerhouse, combining two essential components:

  • Activated Carbon Filter: Tackles odors and harmful gases
  • Green True HEPA™ Filter: Captures 99.97%2 of airborne particles

This all-in-one package offers convenience and long-lasting performance.

  1. The Dynamic Duo: Dual Filter System
  • Deodorization Filter (Lifespan: 6+ months)
  • True HEPA Filter (Lifespan: 12+ months)

This system separates odor control from particle filtration, allowing for more targeted replacement.

  1. The Versatile 3-in-1 Filters

Airmega offers two 3-in-1 filter options:

These filters combine pre-filtering, HEPA filtration, and activated carbon in a single unit, tailored for specific Airmega models.

If you’re seeing Filter Alerts significantly before or after this timeframe, assess the contributing factors to air quality in your home.

  • Are people smoking inside or using aerosols/ chemicals?
  • How many pets live in your home?
  • Do you leave windows and doors open during the day?
  • How often are you vacuuming carpets or sweeping floors?

  • These are all variables to consider, but your first option to select should be an industry-leading Air Purifier that filters more particles, with greater efficiency, for longer.

3Aerosol test conducted in a Biosafety level 3 laboratory with two Coway air purifier models, Coway Airmega 250 and 400 for removal of SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol by US based MRI Global, a not-for-profit laboratory and partner of US Department of Defense. The test was conducted in a 13.1ft3 chamber. Virus was aerosolized for 15 minutes and the product was turned on high for 2 minutes. Result showed each product effectively removed over 99.98% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 2 minutes. This is a result from a laboratory experiment condition and result may vary in different conditions. This result does not imply it kills SARS-CoV-2 or prevents the transmission of Covid-19. Coway Airmega 250S and 400S are identical to the tested models and has equal performance with an additional mobile connectivity function.

5The coverage area of the air purifier is based on an area where the air cleaner can make two air changes per hour (ACPH). An air change per hour translates to how many times an air purifier can clean an area, assuming the height of a ceiling to be 8 ft, in one hour. Therefore ** means two air changes per hour means that the cleaner can clean the area once every 30 minutes and * means air changes per hour means that the air purifier can clean the area once every 60 minutes.
