How to Clean an Air Purifier

Are you wondering how to keep your Airmega air purifier working at peak performance? Proper maintenance not only extends the life of your unit but also ensures you're breathing the cleanest air possible.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about cleaning and maintaining your Coway Airmega air purifier.

Why Air Purifier Maintenance Matters

Before diving into the cleaning process, let's understand why regular maintenance is crucial:

  • Improved air quality: Clean filters capture more airborne particles effectively
  • Extended product lifespan: Regular maintenance helps your Airmega last for years
  • Cost savings: Avoid premature replacement of your unit or its components
  • Energy efficiency: Well-maintained purifiers operate more efficiently, using less electricity
  • Healthier living environment: Properly functioning filters remove more harmful airborne particles

Essential Maintenance Steps for Your Airmega

1. First Things First: Proper Setup and Placement

When you first unbox your Airmega, there's one crucial step many users miss:

  • Remove plastic packaging from all filters before installation
  • If your Airmega is making unusual noise, check if you've removed all plastic wrapping (you'd be surprised how many users skip this step!)

For optimal performance, place your Airmega:

  • Near the middle of the space you want to purify
  • With 6-12 inches of clearance around air intake and outlet areas
  • Away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and high humidity

2. Pre-Filter Cleaning (Every 2-4 Weeks)

The pre-filter is your air purifier's first line of defense, capturing larger particles like dust and pet hair. Here's how to clean it:

  1. Power off and unplug your Airmega for safety
  2. Remove the front panel by gently pulling it toward you
  3. Locate the pre-filter (typically attached to the inside of the front panel)
  4. Clean the pre-filter using one of these methods: vacuum gently with a brush attachment, rinse with cool water (no soap or detergents), for stubborn dust, use a soft brush
  5. Allow to dry completely - this is essential to prevent mold and maintain airflow
  6. Reinstall the pre-filter and secure the front panel

Mark your calendar or set a reminder to clean your pre-filter every 2-4 weeks. Regular pre-filter maintenance significantly improves overall performance and extends the life of your filters. Keep in mind, though, that not all pre-filters can be washed with water, as some can be damaged. You’ll want to clean these with a dry cloth or gentle vacuum.

3. Air Quality Sensor Cleaning (Every 2 Months)

For accurate air quality readings, clean the sensor regularly:

  1. Locate the air quality sensor on the side of your unit
  2. Open the sensor cover
  3. Clean the lens, inlet, and outlet with a dry cotton swab
  4. Close the sensor cover securely

Without regular cleaning, the performance of the air quality sensor deteriorates, affecting your Airmega's ability to automatically adjust to changing air conditions.

4. Exterior Cleaning (Every 2-4 Weeks)

Keep the exterior of your Airmega looking and functioning great:

  1. Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry cloth
  2. For stubborn spots, use a slightly damp cloth (never wet)
  3. Avoid abrasive cleaners or organic solvents that could damage the finish
  4. Pay special attention to air inlet and outlet areas where dust accumulates

5. Filter Replacement

Unlike the pre-filter, the main filter inside cannot be washed or reused. They must be replaced when indicated:

  • Check filter indicators on your unit's display panel
  • Main filters typically need replacement every 12 months (Keep in mind that replacement frequency will vary based on your air quality. In dustier environments, you'll need to replace the filter more frequently)
  • Deodorization filters typically need replacement every 6-12 months
  • Max2 filter cartridges (in newer models) combine both filters and last about 12 months

When replacing filters:

  1. Power off and unplug your unit
  2. Remove the front panel
  3. Take out old filters (note the direction/orientation for installation)
  4. Install new genuine Coway filters
  5. Reset the filter indicator by pressing the reset button

Important: Always use genuine Coway filters for optimal performance. Third-party alternatives may compromise filtration efficiency, fit improperly, or even damage your unit.

3Aerosol test conducted in a Biosafety level 3 laboratory with two Coway air purifier models, Coway Airmega 250 and 400 for removal of SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol by US based MRI Global, a not-for-profit laboratory and partner of US Department of Defense. The test was conducted in a 13.1ft3 chamber. Virus was aerosolized for 15 minutes and the product was turned on high for 2 minutes. Result showed each product effectively removed over 99.98% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 2 minutes. This is a result from a laboratory experiment condition and result may vary in different conditions. This result does not imply it kills SARS-CoV-2 or prevents the transmission of Covid-19. Coway Airmega 250S and 400S are identical to the tested models and has equal performance with an additional mobile connectivity function.

5The coverage area of the air purifier is based on an area where the air cleaner can make two air changes per hour (ACPH). An air change per hour translates to how many times an air purifier can clean an area, assuming the height of a ceiling to be 8 ft, in one hour. Therefore ** means two air changes per hour means that the cleaner can clean the area once every 30 minutes and * means air changes per hour means that the air purifier can clean the area once every 60 minutes.
