5 Benefits of Air Purifiers with Intense Smoke Filter
Standard HVAC systems can keep your indoor air cool and relatively fresh during summer, but once wildfire and pollen season is underway, you need enhanced purification. That’s because not all systems are capable of trapping and neutralizing the smaller particles associated with smoke and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).
Here’s why you need a smoke filter to get you through the smoke season.
Why You Need a Smoke-Intense Filter
With the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires, there is a growing need for air filters that can effectively remove the noxious gases and particulates associated with heavy smoke pollution.
Our new custom filter, compatible with the Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH and 200M, is specifically engineered to target these intense smoke pollutants. By removing up to 99.99% of Naphthalene( Wildfire smoke), up to 99.98% of Sulfur dioxide(SO2, Vehicle exhausts), and Nitrogen dioxide(NO2, city/factor fumes), this filter provides vital air purification for homes impacted by extreme wildfire smoke conditions.
What’s more, this filter can also combat:
- Funky pet odors
- Cigarette smoke
- Food smells
- Nitrogen dioxide(NO2)
- Sulfur dioxide(SO2)
- Mold
Below are five key benefits of incorporating a smoke-intense filter into your air purification system.
Peace of Mind During Wildfire Season
Wildfire season begins on June 1st in the western United States and each year seems to bring more intense and frequent conditions.
But the threat of wildfires isn’t just from organic wood smoke. These fires also consume everything in their path, including man-made plastics and building materials, as well as vehicle components and rubber. As a result, they can release a potent cocktail of harmful toxins into the air, even if you’re hundreds of miles away.
An air purifier with our smoke filter removes the VOCs and gasses from this air, so you’re not forced to bunker down in areas of the home where air circulation from outside is lowest.
Cut Down on Indoor Smoke
The number of cigarette smokers in the US might be falling (down to 20% from 30% in 2000), and smoking inside public venues belongs to a bygone age (in most states), but it only takes one smoker to leave a lingering mark on indoor air quality.
Before you reach for air fresheners (many of which exacerbate VOC contamination) and open windows (letting wildfire smoke in!) switch on your Coway air purifier. Carbon is sensationally effective at neutralizing odor, so you’ll remove the harmful chemicals — there are more than 250 in tobacco smoke — and the funky smell that permeates furniture, curtains and carpets.
Reduce Pollution from Woodfires
There are air quality risks in fall and winter too. If you’re burning wood in the home for heating, you could be releasing microscopic particulate matter, VOCs, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides into the air you breathe.
Children, the elderly and those suffering from asthma are particularly at risk from woodfire smoke. Air filtration can remove even the smallest particles and gases, so you can enjoy the warmth without breathing in the fumes.
Protection from Indoor Pollutants and Allergens
There’s a reason your parents sent you outside for fresh air as a kid. Indoor air pollution levels can be five times higher than those outdoors. Without sufficient ventilation and purification, indoor air can become saturated with carbon monoxide, formaldehyde from furniture, VOCs from cleaning products and mold. These can trigger breathing difficulties or even chronic conditions that attack the immune system.
You don’t have to live among indoor pollutants when your Coway Airmega is running. A single unit can restore a room to safe levels in less than an hour.
New Custom Filter in 2024
The latest addition to our air filter range is a custom filter that can remove intense smoke, pet and allergen pollutants.
While conventional air filters effectively remove common indoor pollutants like kitchen smoke, cigarette smoke, and mold odors, our new Intense Smoke Filter is specifically designed to combat more severe sources of air pollution:
- Wildfire smoke
- Automobile exhaust
- Industrial and urban air pollution
Compatible with the Airmega Mighty AP-1512HH and Airmega 200M, this new filter targets the noxious gasses associated with wildfire smoke and removes 99.99% of:
- Naphthalene (up to 99.99%)
- Sulfur Dioxide (up to 99.98%)
- Nitrogen Dioxide (up to 99.98%)
Why Naphthalene Matters
Recent studies have shown that naphthalene levels spike significantly both indoors and outdoors during wildfire seasons. As research on naphthalene's health impacts evolves, its removal becomes increasingly crucial for protecting human health.
The Intense Smoke Filter offers superior protection against these severe pollutants, providing peace of mind during periods of poor air quality due to wildfires, heavy traffic, or industrial activity.
Coway's Superior Solution for Wildfire Season

3Aerosol test conducted in a Biosafety level 3 laboratory with two Coway air purifier models, Coway Airmega 250 and 400 for removal of SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol by US based MRI Global, a not-for-profit laboratory and partner of US Department of Defense. The test was conducted in a 13.1ft3 chamber. Virus was aerosolized for 15 minutes and the product was turned on high for 2 minutes. Result showed each product effectively removed over 99.98% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 2 minutes. This is a result from a laboratory experiment condition and result may vary in different conditions. This result does not imply it kills SARS-CoV-2 or prevents the transmission of Covid-19. Coway Airmega 250S and 400S are identical to the tested models and has equal performance with an additional mobile connectivity function.

5The coverage area of the air purifier is based on an area where the air cleaner can make two air changes per hour (ACPH). An air change per hour translates to how many times an air purifier can clean an area, assuming the height of a ceiling to be 8 ft, in one hour. Therefore ** means two air changes per hour means that the cleaner can clean the area once every 30 minutes and * means air changes per hour means that the air purifier can clean the area once every 60 minutes.
